Homeschool Requirements in Alabama

Choose your homeschool option

Decide whether you will homeschool under a church school umbrella program, hire a certified private tutor, or operate as a state-approved private school. Most Alabama families choose the church school umbrella option.

Register with a church school umbrella (if applicable)

If you chose the church school umbrella option, sign up with that program. The church school will handle the required enrollment filing with the state on your behalf.

Teach all required subjects

Make sure your homeschool instruction covers all six required subjects: Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Health.

Maintain attendance records

Keep an ongoing record of your child's attendance throughout the school year. These records document that your child is receiving regular instruction.
