Homeschool Requirements in Maine

Submit Consent of Equivalent Instruction form

Each year, complete and submit the Consent of Equivalent Instruction form to your local school board by September 1. This must be done annually to legally notify the district of your intent to homeschool.

Teach all required subjects for 175 days

Provide instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Maine History, Health and Physical Education, and Fine Arts for at least 175 days each school year.

Complete an annual assessment of your child

Each year, have your child assessed using an approved method — such as a standardized test, a portfolio evaluation conducted by a certified teacher, or another method approved by your school board.

Keep assessment results on file

Retain the results of your child's annual assessment in your records. These documents may be needed to demonstrate compliance with Maine's homeschool requirements.
