Homeschool Requirements in Massachusetts

Submit written educational plan to superintendent

Before you begin homeschooling, write up your educational plan covering the subjects you will teach, the materials you will use, and your teaching methods, then submit it to your local school superintendent for approval.

Teach all required subjects

Your homeschool curriculum must cover all required subjects: Reading, Writing, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Health, Physical Education, Music, and Art.

Provide instruction for 180 days per year

Make sure your child receives instruction for at least 180 days during the school year, and keep records that show you have met this requirement.

Maintain a portfolio of curriculum materials and student work

Throughout the year, collect and keep a portfolio that includes your curriculum materials and samples of your child's completed work to document their progress.

Submit annual progress report or portfolio for review

At the end of each school year, submit your child's progress report or portfolio to the superintendent so they can review your child's educational progress.

Renew your educational plan each school year

At the start of every new school year, submit an updated educational plan to your superintendent for approval before continuing to homeschool.
