Homeschool Requirements in North Carolina

File annual Notice of Intent with DNPE

Each year before your school year begins, file a Notice of Intent online with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) at ncdnpe.org. This is required every year without exception.

Teach all required subjects

Your homeschool curriculum must cover Mathematics, Reading, Grammar, Spelling, Science, and Social Studies each school year.

Maintain an attendance register

Keep an ongoing attendance register that records your child's school attendance throughout the year. This is a required record for your homeschool.

Keep immunization records on file

Maintain a copy of your child's immunization records as part of your homeschool files. These must be kept on file and available if requested.

Administer a nationally standardized test annually

Once each school year, administer a nationally standardized test to your child. You choose which approved standardized test to use.

Retain test results for at least 12 months

After your child completes the annual standardized test, keep the results on file for a minimum of 12 months.
