File written notification of intent

Submit a written notice to your local school district superintendent by September 1 each year, or within 14 days if you are withdrawing your child from public school mid-year. This notification must be renewed every year.

Teach all required subjects

Your homeschool curriculum must cover Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Health, and Physical Education for at least 900 hours total during the school year.

Log at least 900 instructional hours

Track your instruction time throughout the year to ensure you meet the 900-hour annual minimum. Keep attendance and instruction records as documentation.

Choose an annual assessment method

Each year you must assess your child using one of three options: a standardized test, a portfolio review conducted by a licensed teacher, or an alternative method approved by your superintendent.

Complete the annual assessment

Carry out whichever assessment method you selected — administer the standardized test, have a licensed teacher review your child's portfolio, or complete the superintendent-approved alternative.

Submit assessment results to superintendent

After the assessment is complete, send the results to your school district superintendent as required. This closes out your annual compliance obligations for the current school year.

Maintain attendance and instruction records

Keep ongoing records of your child's attendance and the instruction provided throughout the school year. These records support your compliance with the 900-hour requirement and may be needed if questions arise.
