Homeschool Requirements in Rhode Island

Submit written instructional plan to local school committee

Before you begin homeschooling, write up your instructional plan and submit it to your local school committee for approval. You must do this before your child starts any home instruction.

Teach all required subjects

Your homeschool program must cover Reading, Writing, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, History, Health, and Physical Education throughout the school year.

Complete 180 days of instruction

You are required to provide instruction for at least 180 days per year. Keep track of your school days so you can demonstrate you have met this requirement.

Maintain a portfolio of student work

Collect and keep samples of your child's schoolwork throughout the year, as this portfolio will be reviewed annually to show your child's progress.

Renew instructional plan with school committee each year

At the end of each school year, resubmit your written instructional plan to your local school committee for approval so you can continue homeschooling the following year.
