Homeschool Requirements in Virginia

File Notice of Intent with superintendent

Submit your Notice of Intent to homeschool to your local school division superintendent by August 15 each year, or at least 30 days before you begin if starting mid-year.

Confirm you meet a qualification requirement

Make sure you qualify to homeschool under one of the four options: you hold a baccalaureate degree, you are a licensed teacher, you use a licensed tutor, or you use an approved correspondence or distance-learning course.

Plan instruction in all required subjects

Ensure your homeschool curriculum covers all five required subjects: Mathematics, Science, English (grammar, composition, and literature), History and Social Studies, and Health and Physical Education.

Choose an annual assessment method

Select one of the three approved ways to assess your child's progress each year: a standardized achievement test, a portfolio review conducted by a licensed teacher, or an evaluation by a certified professional.

Submit evidence of satisfactory academic progress

By August 1 each year, send your superintendent the results or documentation from your chosen assessment method showing that your child has made satisfactory academic progress.
